Probe the Natural Olive Oil You Are Consuming

Posted by Unknown Friday, 5 April 2013

Are you health conscious? Therefore, consume natural olive oil? Good, you do so. But, is the oil you are having really healthy or have you been a victim? How will you understand that? Go through the below mentioned processes and you can check the authenticity of your extra virgin olive oil, yourself.

  • Smoke Test: This test is easy to conduct and efficient. Real extra virgin olive oil gives smoke if cooked at a temperature of 330°F to 410°F. It depends on the quality too. Many a times when fresh olive oil is mixed with other oils such as sunflower, its originality ceases to exist.
  • The Burn Test: This is a better test than the one mentioned above. Take your extra virgin olive oil and see if it is able to keep an oil lamp burning. If the lamp burns for a considerable amount of time, then it is fresh olive oil. Some argue, about many other oils that keep a lamp burning. Therefore, you cannot depend solely on the burning test to check the authentication of your olive oil.
  • Price: Now, it can’t get simpler than this. Prices fluctuate with time and place. You need to find out the market prices first. If the cost of your olive oil is drastically different, then you need to find out the reason fast.
  • Taste Test: Generally, the taste of olive oils finishes with a pungency. This is due to the presence of polyphenols. Doubtlessly, there are several varieties of olive oils and it is difficult to differentiate them via their taste. But again, if you are an ardent natural olive oil consumer then it should not take much effort.
  • Sediment: If you get to see sediments, it is enough to prove that the oil is not a genuinely prepared olive oil. Though sediments are rarely found, it is an excellent indicator.
  • Harvest Date: You can check the harvest date when the bottle is in your hand. For now, only the producers do it.
  • Awards: Ideally, awards are given to the deservers. If an oil company is awarded by a reputable authority for maintaining the authenticity of olive oil, the company becomes trustworthy. Do some research to find out: if or not the producers of the company have earned some accolades? Though it is not the ultimate criteria to judge if the olive oil you are consuming is good or not, still it helps to gain confidence.
  • State and Country Council Certification: State and country council certificates can be another way to judge the genuineness of your olive oil.

Due to corruption, the market has become inundated with impure and adulterated oil. Check extensively before consuming oil or else, you might be having poison while thinking it to be premium quality extra virgin olive oil.
